We were awarded the Active mark again for the third year running
for our commitment to sport.

Library news

Just before half term the County Librarians audited our book stock and replaced old books with two hundred new ones. We will receive another hundred in September. This is part of a plan to improve the reading stock and make this space more attractive to readers.

INSET day changes

INSET day changes and the Y5 & Y6 Residential
The residential to Carnyorth has had to be cancelled due to escalating costs, the number of participants falling and value for money concerns.
The residential experience is always a highlight of the school year and much looked forward to by the pupils.
We really did not want to disappoint them and much time and effort has been given to planning an alternative. This we have successfully done by offering the completely different experience of visiting London for two days.
Accommodation and theatre options were very difficult to correlate but finally this was done for the 4th and 5th June.
We realise that this clashes with the INSET school closure day planned for Friday 5th June but this really cannot be helped and hope you will understand that the school will be open on this day but will be closed on Wednesday 22nd July instead. Many apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Superb achievement by our pupils at the Wadebridge Music and Speech Festival - All the entrants performed superbly receiving certificates, medals and complimentary remarks from the adjudicators. Daniel and Gwilym also won cups for first place in their respective classes. Many congratulations to them all.

Curriculum of the future.

We have just been notified that our school`s application to become a `school for change` has been successful. This means that we have the wonderful opportunity to rethink the delivery of the curriculum to improve teaching and learning. We will be working with external partners and receive funding of £15,000 for the next three years to implement these changes. As yet we are in the planning stages gathering ideas. We have asked the children what changes they would like to see and we would welcome thoughts from parents as well.
So if you have an idea please jot it down and send it into school.
These will be exciting times!

Buzz Club

This club is so much enjoyed by many pupils that Mrs Irons needs more help. The club sessions occur monthly on a Wednesday from 3.00 - 4.00pm. Please do contact either the secretary or Mrs Irons if you are willing to help - thank you.

Changes to INSET days

To enable all staff to revalidate their First Aid certificates we need to take part in a one day course on Friday 13th February.
Therefore the school will be closed on this day and half term will begin on Thursday 12th February.
However by closing on this day it means that the Summer term will now end on Wednesday 22nd July.

Pudsey Extravaganza!!

We all enjoyed raising funds for Pudsey and Children in Need. Class 3 did an excellent job arranging the talent competition and the competitors showed just how talented they are with dancers, singers, musicians and comedians.
Thank you so very much for your generosity sending into school so many delicious cakes. Pupils enjoyed the `cake break` for several days!! Together we raised £130 - wonderful.

Children in Need

The children organised their own talent show which was won by a group of girls from Class 1. Parents generously supplied lots of lovely cakes for break time.

Class 2 collages

Class 2 have been inspired by the paintings of Alan Davie to create their own collages.

Anti bullying

Years three and four enjoyed a workshop on friendship as part of anti-bullying week.

The whole school has been looking at different sorts of houses and homes.

Walk to School week

Thank you so much to everyone who supported this activity. Class 3 were the winners with 56 green feet.
However we failed to beat our record. Next time!!

Anti Bullying week

We work very hard to ensure that all children feel that they are
valued and safe at school. Any bullying incidents are dealt with
swiftly. To help pupils develop strategies for coping with friendship disputes Y3 and Y4 will be taking part in a workshop this week.

Swimming Gala

On 11th November, a team will be entering this competition with
all the other feeder primary schools in the Wadebridge area. Last year we won the small school cup - so very good luck to the team.

Christmas Dinner

This year we are offering a Christmas buffet for the pupils at lunch
time. The cost will be the same at £1.90. This will lead into party
activities for the afternoon and the children can wear non school
uniform for this occasion.

Pudsey Extravaganza!!

Fun day in school on Friday 14th November to support the Children in
Need Appeal!
The School Council has arranged a `St Mabyn School has talent` competition which will take place in the Village Hall from 12.40pm onwards. They have also requested a non uniform day and cakes for break time! Non uniform can be worn by contributing a £1 but we would ask for sensible wear please. A `cake break` will be greatly enjoyed so any donations of cakes would be greatly appreciated – thank you very much in anticipation of your support.

Bug Busting time!

We are currently suffering a plague of headlice.
With half term around the corner can we all check heads and rid the school of these annoying creatures. The best method is to use hair conditioner on wet hair and comb through with a fine toothed comb.
Headlice are quite persistent so checks need to be made weekly. We would also ask that all girls wear their hair tied back. A pamphlet providing more information accompanies this newsletter for your information.

Clubs

There will be some changes to the clubs on offer after half term. High 5 will stop because of light and weather to be replaced by Computer Club for Class 3.
As there are several younger children wishing to play football but as yet do not have sufficient skills to play with the older pupils, for safety reasons .Mrs Powell has offered to run a second football club for pupils in Class 2 and below on a Thursday afternoons.
All clubs are run voluntarily to offer social and learning opportunities to the pupils. So if pupils sign up to a club their attendance on a regular basis is expected. As we encourage politeness it would be very helpful to the club organisers if children notified them if they are unable to attend.

Meet our new School Council.

The council is comprised of a chairperson, Daniel, who is also an assessor for other schools, Rosie and Shauna who are also assessors and an elected representative from each year group - Sophie, Erin, Arran, Olivia, Sean, Wesley and Thomas.
This year the council is aiming to receive their platinum award.

Nine Ashes

Class 2 spent the day finding out about life in the past and what we need to survive. They built mini shelters, identified woodland plants, ate around the camp-fire and listened to stories.

After school activity clubs are much enjoyed by the pupils and gives them the opportunity to develop their interests. This term members of staff have been joined by three parents willing to organise clubs to extend the range of activities. The timetable for this half term is as follows:

Career change

Linda Dingle, dinner supervisor and cleaner, will be leaving our school after many years as a pupil and employee to begin a new career on 23rd September.
Therefore there is a vacancy for a Dinner Supervisor at school for five hours a week. If anyone would like to apply for the job please contact the secretary for further details.

Harvest Breakfast

Our Harvest Breakfasts have become quite a tradition in our school when pupils, staff, parents and friends meet in the church to say a special `Thank you `for all the food that is so readily available to us.
Everyone is warmly welcomed so do come and join us if you can. There is always a lovely spread of breakfast food to eat generously donated by parents. There is a list of food ideas displayed in the Reception area. We would like to suggest a donation of a £1 each to our chosen charity which this year is `Food Aid`.

Singing Up

Pupils from six Cornish primary schools have been "Singing Up" as part of an exciting pilot project run by the Cornwall Music Service which culminated in a special concert at the Tremough campus in Penryn over the weekend.
The youngsters from Archbishop Benson Church of England Primary School, Bosvigo Primary School, Mabe Primary School, Constantine Primary School, St Petroc's Church of England VA School and St Mabyn Church of England Primary School were chosen to take part in the Sing UP scheme at the beginning of this year.

Summer activities

Summer activities continue at a speedy rate. Y6 are taking part in a six week sailing course at Rock and two Business and Enterprise days at Wadebridge Comprehensive School.
Y5 were represented by Daniel and Neve at the K`Nex challenge day and Harry and Daniel are representing the school at the `Wake and Shake` competition this week.
Class 2 are visiting Wheal Martyn Museum to learn about china Clay production and combining this with a visit to the tropical biome at Eden to learn about the rainforest plants.

Royal Cornwall Show

The weather was good, if a bit windy, and another successful show has ended. Thank you so much to all parents who chose to take pupils to the show on Friday or Saturday instead of Thursday. By collecting data from the children thirty eight pupils visited the show on the Friday.

Church Fete

The Church Fete is always a wonderful summer tradition taking place on the Green. As part of this the school will be demonstrating Maypole dancing so do come along and enjoy a lovely event. Much of the school furniture is used for seating and stalls and it would be greatly appreciated if we could have some volunteers to help return the equipment at the end of the event - thank you in anticipation!

H.S.A.

On Thursday it is the H.S.A. A.G.M. at 7.00pm so please do come along and support a committee that has been very successful this year.

Sports Day

On Tuesday 17th June it is Sports Day and this will begin at 1.15pm. District Sports will be held on Monday 7th July.
This is followed by the inter schools Swimming Gala at Bodmin on Wednesday 18th when we will be entering a good team of swimmers.

Revised school closure dates

The school closure date for the show was obviously very popular which has led us to rethink closure dates for next year.
The closure dates will now be Wednesday 3rd September, Thursday 25th September, Monday 3rd November, Friday 5th June (RCS) and Wednesday 22nd July. Please amend your calendars accordingly.

Trethorne Leisure Park

Class 1 thoroughly enjoyed a visit to Trethorne Leisure Park where
they had hands on experience with animals. The children were able to milk the cow, feed the lambs, hold small animals such as rabbits & ducklings followed by a pony ride. As our topic for this half term is living things, the children were able to enhance their learning through this experience.

The calendar for the next academic year can be downloaded for your information. Please keep safely for future reference.
May I remind parents that attendance at school should be the priority for all pupils from Monday to Friday. Children should only be absent for medical or family bereavement reasons. Random days off should not be taken.
Unfortunately our attendance data shows that we are still not meeting the targets required so next Tuesday we are being visited by the Educational Welfare Office who will be inspecting the registers.

School Council news

The Council gave a very successful presentation to parents and Parish Councillors last week. They confidently answered a range of questions.
To gain the PADL awards School Councils are assessed by members of another council from another participating school. Daniel and Joseph, as peer assessors, recently visited Nanstallon School to assess them for their Bronze award. We have just heard that our assessment for gold will be on Wednesday 7th May.

Smiley Challenges

The five `Smiley Challenges`
We have introduced a new challenge for pupils in Class 3 to develop skills and knowledge in five different areas - Sporting, Creativity, Citizenship,Life skills and Brainpower! On the completion of three out of four challenges in each area pupils will gain the appropriate coloured `smiley face`. We are confident that all pupils will be able to achieve at least one badge and maybe someone will gain all five to be the complete `all rounder.`

S.A.T. reminder

All pupils in Y2,Y3.Y4.Y5 & Y6 will be taking part in S.A.T. assessments during the week beginning the 12th May. This is the one time in the year when pupils are formally assessed using national tests.

St Mabyn Church Guide

Pupils have produced a well-illustrated booklet Guide to the Church as their effort for the Restoration Appeal. The school uses the Church several times a week and the children are very familiar with the building but working on this project has helped them gain new insights and they share this with visitors who have already commented favourably. The modest charge goes to the Appeal - our warmest thanks to all involved for their hard work.

Welcome to the Summer Term

This term is probably the most popular of all when we can look forward to using the Green again and there are so many events to look forward to such as Sports day. Presentation Evening, the Fete and the Y5 & Y6 residential.
First day of the new term and despite weather forecasts of hail and snow the Y5 & Y6 pupils spent three days at the Delaware Outdoor Centre taking part in a range of activities that included abseiling, climbing, ski-ing, mountain biking, archery, canoeing and skating - a trulypacked itinerary which kept us all very busy! The instuctors were challenging but caring and everyone agreed that the cook was excellent.
So despite not much sleep a great time was had by all. Thank you so much to all the parents who supported this activity so generously.

This term is especially busy for the Y6 pupils who will have the opportunity to take part in the K`Nex challenge, Induction and Business and Enterprise days at Wadebridge School and sailing sessions at Rock.
More details about all these activities will follow in due course.
The younger children are being offered a taster `Soccer Tots` session and visits for all are being arranged.

Clubs this term will begin the week commencing April 14th and will cease at the end of the week on Friday 27th June.
