Children turn rubbish into rewards

More than 500 schoolchildren from the Caradon, North Cornwall and Restormel districts took part in the fifth annual School and Community Rubbish Awareness (SCRAP) Attack competition, clearing up more than a tonne of rubbish.
The winning schools received prizes ranging from trophies to cash donated by McDonalds for a school environmental project and trips to Dobwalls Family Adventure Park theme park, the Eden Project and the Blue Reef Aquarium.
The children also produce written projects on their findings and the issues of recycling and waste reduction. Prizes are awarded to the schools in each district that pick up the most litter and produce the best written project.

• Caradon – winner Burraton CP School (Saltash), runner up Polperro CP School
• North Cornwall – winner Altarnun CP School, runner up St Mabyn C of E School
• Restormel Northern Zone – winner Mawgan-in-Pydar CP School
• Restormel Central Zone – winner Treverbyn School
• Restormel South Zone – winner Fowey School
• Restormel runner up – Biscovey School

Speaking on behalf of all three Cornish councils, Councillor Mrs Anne Boosey, Restormel Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "SCRAP Attack helps children in East Cornwall think imaginatively about waste reduction and recycling.
Their enthusiasm can help us all make the move from a throw away society to one where it’s the norm to reduce, re-use and recycle.”

Slip, Slop, Slap - Sun Safety

When the sun does appear it is quite fierce at this time of year when we try to use the outdoor facilities as much as we can. All the children are taught to be aware of the dangers of sunburn and are encouraged to SLIP on the 'T' shirt, SLOP on the sun cream and SLAP on a hat. Children are encouraged to use their own cream and this should be applied at home - especially for the younger pupils. Baseball hats with the school logo are available from the H.S.A., but any hat is better than none.
Fortunately the wonderful spreading horse chestnut tree provides a good shady area at playtimes.

Barnabas Award

Following our entry in this competition we were delighted to receive a Merit Award and a prize of £50! The children's work will be on display with all the other entrants from 5th June in Truro Cathedral and is well worth visiting if you are in the city. The presentation ceremony will be on Sunday 11th June in Truro Cathedral at 2:30pm
